President's Message April 2014

As we enter April 2014 we close out a lot of accomplishments in our first quarter of 2014 with a successful Region 11 Symposium in San Diego and great local programs in January, February and March.

As we move further into 2014 the challenges to the healthcare sector are numerous but by many measures we are moving forward. Covered California set the pace among many states and successfully enrolled 1.2 million covered lives into health plans offered through the exchange. An additional 1.5 million applicants on the exchange were determined to be eligible for Medi-Cal coverage. Only when the extended enrollment ends can we evaluate the outcome of a new way to provide coverage to Californians. In the interim hospitals and physicians are working together as never before to provide quality care at a lower cost.

Your HFMA chapter leadership continues to plan a large array of educational events.

  • In April our education outreach program will provide a half day of education on April 16th and 17th. Both events will be held in auditoriums generously made available by provider organizations. Inland Empire members should head for Upland CA on the 16th at the San Antonio Community Hospital and Orange County members can participate in the same program at the Children’s Hospital in Orange on the 17th.
  • Also in April your chapter is cosponsoring a dinner and educational program on April 23rd with the Health Care Executives organization and the USC Sol Price School of Business. An impressive panel will present on “Beyond Healthcare Reform: From Volume to Value” at the City Club in downtown Los Angeles. Don’t miss it!

Looking further out to May be sure to join your fellow members for an afternoon of education and an evening “Beach Party” on the Queen Mary on May 15th. Based on member survey comments we added an afternoon of education to precede both the December Holiday Party and the May Awards night dinner. Please join us!

2014 is going to be a great year and your chapter is blessed with committed volunteers working to bring you the information you need to succeed and the information you need to succeed. Enjoy the programs and feel free to become more active as a volunteer. Those who get the most from HFMA are usually those who give the most. A 60 year tradition for HFMA SOCAL!
